AliousBilly Paynter, a former player for Hull City and Doncaster Rovers, took over as manager of the eighth-tier side Runcorn Linnets in March 2022. Prior to this role, he had coaching experience at Everton’s academy and with the senior team at Port Vale.
Under Paynter’s leadership, Runcorn Linnets finished second in the Northern Premier League Division One West in the 2022-23 season. However, the club was denied promotion after losing in the playoffs. At 39 years old, Paynter has now decided to step down from his managerial position at the club.
In his farewell statement, Paynter thanked the club’s board, staff, and players for their support during his two-season tenure. He acknowledged the achievement of their second-place finish but expressed disappointment over the playoff failure, taking full responsibility for it. Paynter wished the club success in the future.
The club’s chairman, Peter Cartledge, praised Paynter’s integrity and the success he brought to Runcorn Linnets by guiding them to their highest finish in years. Despite the playoff disappointment, Cartledge commended Paynter’s work and wished him well, stating that the club will now begin the process of appointing a new manager for the next season.
