AliousFormer Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has shared his thoughts on the chances of Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison being included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.
With Southgate set to announce a provisional England training squad of around 30 players today, Maddison appears well-positioned to be named among the group. However, Agbonlahor has expressed concerns about Maddison’s prospects when the squad is eventually trimmed down in the coming weeks.
The pundit highlighted the wealth of attacking talent available to Southgate, with Maddison facing stiff competition from the likes of Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze and potentially even Manchester City’s Jack Grealish for a place in the squad.
During his appearance on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor acknowledged the impressive form of players like Eze and Manchester City’s Cole Palmer, raising doubts about Maddison’s inclusion in the final squad.
“I look at the talent we have got that can be chosen in the attacking part of the field, Foden, Palmer, Bowen, Grealish, Rashford, Gordon, Watkins, Toney, Kane, Bellingham, Eze, Saka, Maddison,” Agbonlahor said. “Of the talent we have got available, the only player I am worried for at that amount of players is Maddison because I feel like Eze has been outstanding, Palmer has been outstanding, and for that number 10 position, will Maddison be the one that could be in a bit of trouble?”
Despite Maddison’s dip in form for Tottenham in the second half of the season, it would still be considered a surprise if Southgate were to omit the playmaker from his final Euro 2024 squad. Maddison’s ability to change a game in an instant could make him a valuable asset for England, even as an impact substitute.
With Southgate spoiled for choice in attacking areas, Agbonlahor’s comments underscore the intense competition Maddison faces to secure his place in the final Euro 2024 squad.
