AliousCrystal Palace have intensified discussions for Real Betis defender Chadi Riad by submitting a bid of £12.7 million with an additional £1.7 million in add-ons. Mail Sport exclusively revealed on Monday that Palace initiated talks for the former Barcelona center-back, facing heightened competition from other European clubs. Palace seeks defensive reinforcement amidst increasing interest in their English international Marc Guehi.
Riad, originally from Majorca but representing Morocco due to parental heritage, recently joined Betis last summer in a £3 million deal. Despite Barcelona having a buy-back option, they are focusing on other priorities. It’s understood that Barcelona is entitled to 50 percent of the profit Betis earns from any transfer.
The 20-year-old, who stands at 6ft 3ins, possesses athleticism, speed, and is left-footed. Palace has been scouting for such a defender amid growing interest in Guehi, who is also being monitored by Manchester United.
Betis values Riad at approximately £15 million, with ongoing discussions between Palace representatives in recent days to reach an agreement. Palace has also explored options such as Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg and Moussa Niakhaté from Nottingham Forest for the center-back position, although they may come at a higher cost.
Despite finishing the season strongly under Oliver Glasner, Palace acknowledges the need to bolster their squad due to increased interest in key players. Inquiries are anticipated for Guehi, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Michael Olise, who is attracting attention from clubs like Newcastle, Manchester United, and Chelsea.
Midfielder Adam Wharton, acquired from Blackburn in January, is also attracting interest, particularly from Bayern Munich. However, Palace values him highly and aims to persuade him to stay.
