Paul Robinson has recommended that Tottenham should prioritize signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace over entering a costly bidding contest for Jarrad Branthwaite in the upcoming transfer window.

Everton may consider selling Branthwaite due to their current financial predicament at Goodison Park, which could lead to PSR violations. However, Robinson suggests that Guehi could be a more strategic acquisition.

In an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Robinson expressed the need for additional defensive support.

Since his January transfer, Dragusin has had limited playtime, occasionally filling in as a substitute and even playing as a defensive midfielder in critical matches.

Robinson pointed out that key players like Romero are prone to suspensions and injuries, and with van de Ven experiencing multiple hamstring injuries, the team can’t risk being understaffed in defense, as was the case when they faced Manchester City with a limited lineup.

While acknowledging Branthwaite’s exceptional talent, Robinson noted that any club signing him would likely pay a premium due to Everton’s financial woes.

He advised considering Guehi, who offers more experience, is part of the England national team, and has consistently performed at a high level.

Robinson argued that Guehi could immediately contribute and make a significant impact, whereas acquiring Branthwaite would mean investing in potential at a steep cost due to Everton’s fiscal circumstances.

Guehi, with over a hundred appearances for Crystal Palace since July 2021, has been integral to the team.

Despite missing 12 league games due to a knee injury, he returned as captain for the season’s last two matches, possibly playing his final game in a resounding 5-0 victory against Aston Villa.

Opting for Guehi could be a more economical choice for Tottenham, especially considering the financial considerations of chairman Daniel Levy this summer.
