AliousAlan Hutton has suggested Tottenham could propose a player-plus-cash deal involving Joe Rodon to secure the signing of Leeds United’s highly-rated teenager Archie Gray this summer.
Rodon spent last season on loan at Leeds, impressing in defense for Daniel Farke’s side despite their playoff final loss against Southampton which denied the club Premier League promotion.
While Leeds remain keen on making Rodon’s move permanent, missing out on the lucrative top-flight could scupper their chances of affording a straight cash deal for the Welsh center-back.
Hutton believes Spurs could therefore package Rodon along with a significant fee in an attempt to beat other suitors to the capture of 18-year-old gem Gray.
“It would have to be big cash as well, not just Rodon,” Hutton told Tottenham News exclusively.
“Gray has had an outstanding season, playing multiple positions.
He plays with such freedom which would suit Ange Postecoglou’s style perfectly.
He’s comfortable on the ball, gets forward well and has great crossing ability.”
“He’s so young too, he’ll only get better. It would be a big fee, but he could be there for years or even sold on for profit later if he kicks on. An outstanding potential signing.”
With Rodon unlikely to be a regular starter under Postecoglou, allowing Leeds to sign him could sweeten a deal for Gray that will still require a huge transfer fee.
Tottenham are keen to evolve their squad this summer after missing Champions League qualification.
Acquiring an exciting teenage talent like Gray could be a smart long-term investment, even if it requires using Rodon as a makeweight.
Whether such an ambitious part-exchange deal is realistic remains to be seen.
But Hutton feels it is an avenue Spurs should explore to land one of England’s brightest young prospects.
