Support is growing for Jose Mourinho to renew his professional partnership with Joe Rodon, potentially upsetting Leeds United fans in the process.
Mourinho, who appreciated Rodon’s abilities while at Tottenham, now leads Fenerbahce in Turkey.
After departing from Tottenham, Mourinho managed Roma in Italy, where he was rumored to be interested in Rodon.
Leeds United is eager to secure Rodon’s return to Yorkshire for the upcoming season, but they anticipate fierce competition.
Alasdair Gold of football.london speculated on a podcast about Mourinho’s potential interest in recruiting the product of Swansea City’s academy now that he’s back in the coaching realm.
Gold mused, “Jose had a liking for Joe Rodon, and I’m curious if he might consider bringing him to Fenerbahce, where I believe he would excel.”
Mourinho has openly expressed his admiration for Rodon.
On his last day in Tottenham, he entrusted Hugo Lloris, the team captain at the time, with Rodon’s care, believing Rodon had the makings of the club’s top defender and a remarkable talent.
Following Rodon’s debut, Mourinho praised his performance, despite some minor errors, after a 3-1 victory over Sheffield United in 2021.
Mourinho remarked, “Rodon played well overall.
He’s a young player from the Championship who needs to grow.
You can spend a fortune on an established defender to solve your problems, or you can invest in a promising player like Rodon who needs to develop.
He’s bound to make mistakes, but he has the potential to improve significantly. I’m very satisfied with how he’s progressing.”
Despite Tottenham activating an extension on his contract, Rodon is expected to leave, especially after an impressive loan spell at Leeds United, where he contributed to their run to the Championship play-off final.
