According to finance expert Stefan Borson, Leeds United could have faced a points deduction next season had they secured promotion to the Premier League due to potential breaches of financial regulations linked to promotion bonuses.
Despite narrowly missing out on promotion after losing the Championship play-off final, Leeds were set to pay £15 million in promotion clauses.
With reported losses of £33.7 million in their 2022-23 accounts, concerns arose regarding their compliance with Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Borson suggests that Leeds may have averted a points deduction by remaining in the Championship for another year, as promotion would have necessitated paying out £20 million in bonuses without corresponding revenue influx from the Premier League.
The uncertainty now revolves around Leeds’ financial situation in the upcoming season.
