AliousAccording to former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton, chairman Daniel Levy will be willing to splash out £60 million to secure the services of Crystal Palace attacker Eberechi Eze this summer, a move that would excite new manager Ange Postecoglou.
Despite strong interest from Manchester United and Manchester City for the in-form England international, Hutton believes Spurs are the frontrunners to land the 25-year-old playmaker.
Eze enjoyed a sensational end to the 2023/24 season, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists in 31 appearances across all competitions, ultimately earning a place in England’s squad for Euro 2024.
While rumors persist regarding Eze’s future club destination, Hutton sees no reason why a deal cannot be completed, even at Crystal Palace’s reported £60 million exit clause valuation.
“Yeah, I think so for someone who is so talented and at a good age,” Hutton told Tottenham News. “Normally when you get a little bit older, you get a little more restricted.
You need to play in a certain type of formation, you need to be this sort of player and he just doesn’t look like that sort of guy.”
Hutton praised Eze’s attacking qualities, freedom on the pitch, and ability to score and create goals, attributes that have earned him an England call-up.
The former Spurs defender believes Eze could become a “shining star” and that £60 million is a fair price in the current market.
While Levy is known for his tough negotiating stance, Hutton expects the Tottenham chairman to make an exception for a talent like Eze, citing recent big-money signings such as Tanguy Ndombele, Richarlison, Brennan Johnson, Cristian Romero, and James Maddison.
Bringing in Eze would represent a statement of intent from Tottenham, who have yet to truly break through the £60 million barrier like some of their rivals.
However, Hutton believes such an investment is necessary for Spurs to re-establish themselves in the Champions League and maintain their presence among Europe’s elite.
Where exactly Postecoglou would deploy Eze remains uncertain, with Maddison occupying the number 10 role and captain Son Heung-min expected to return to the left wing once a new striker is brought in. Nonetheless, Hutton suggests that having too many quality players is a welcome problem for any manager.
