AliousLeeds United’s newly-promoted Premier League rivals Burnley had one of their players play a crucial role for his national team in their opening match of the European Championship. Wout Weghorst, a 31-year-old striker, came off the bench to score a late winner as the Netherlands defeated Poland 2-1.
Despite spending the previous season on loan at German club TSG Hoffenheim, Weghorst remains contracted to Burnley until next summer.
He was part of the Netherlands squad for this year’s Euros and made an immediate impact after being brought on as a substitute.
With the score tied at 1-1 against Poland, Weghorst was introduced in the 81st minute, replacing Memphis Depay. Just two minutes later, the Burnley striker found the back of the net to give the Dutch a 2-1 lead, which they would hang on to until the final whistle.
While starting the match on the bench, Weghorst’s decisive goal off the bench proved pivotal for the Netherlands in their opening group stage match of the European Championship tournament.
His performance will undoubtedly give Leeds United a glimpse of the threat he could pose when they face off against Burnley in the upcoming Premier League season.
