AliousDan Bardell, a journalist for Sky Sports and talkSPORT, has suggested that while Tottenham Hotspur may not necessarily need Eberechi Eze, the Crystal Palace midfielder would likely be a starting option if Spurs were to secure his services.
Recent reports from FootballTransfers indicate that Tottenham are scheduled to meet with Eze’s representatives this week to discuss a potential transfer.
Acquiring Eze from Crystal Palace this summer could see Ange Postecoglou break Tottenham’s club transfer record for the England international.
However, Bardell believes that Eze may opt to stay at Palace given the options Tottenham already have available, particularly in the number 10 role, where they invested heavily in James Maddison last summer.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Bardell stated, “You would say Eze’s best position is as a number 10, but Tottenham has got Maddison there, who they spent a lot of money on last summer, albeit his form fell off towards the end of the season.”
While acknowledging that Eze is ready for a move away from Crystal Palace, Bardell suggests that the Eagles’ stability under manager Glasner and their strong finish to the season might persuade them to keep hold of their team this summer.
“I would argue that Tottenham and Eze aren’t a match, but he’s such a good player that if he does join, he would probably be straight into the starting XI,” Bardell added.
Despite Tottenham’s interest in Eze, Bardell’s comments indicate that the acquisition may not be a necessity for Spurs, given their existing options in the attacking midfield role.
However, if a deal were to materialize, Eze’s talent and quality could potentially earn him a starting berth in Postecoglou’s side.
