Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a move for West Ham’s midfield enforcer Edson Alvarez during the upcoming transfer window.

As disclosed by senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, United manager Erik ten Hag maintains a strong interest in Alvarez, having previously worked with him at Ajax.

This development comes amidst reports that United are actively seeking to offload Casemiro following a challenging season.

The potential departure of the Brazilian could free up significant wages for a replacement.

Alvarez, who has made a significant impact at West Ham in his debut season, may be enticed by the prospect of reuniting with ten Hag at Old Trafford.

However, West Ham are expected to demand a fee exceeding £40 million for the defensive midfielder, potentially complicating negotiations.

Should United fail to secure Alvarez, they are prepared to explore alternatives, with Benfica’s Joao Neves emerging as a potential backup option.

However, Neves’ £70 million release clause may prove prohibitive for United in the current window.

The Red Devils are prioritizing a midfield overhaul ahead of the 2024-25 season, with ten Hag keen to strengthen this area to ensure a strong start to the campaign.

While West Ham are bracing for potential transfer requests from several players, including Alvarez, during their transition period, the Mexican international’s contract runs until 2028, putting the Hammers in a strong negotiating position.
