AliousAlan Hutton, a former Tottenham and Rangers defender, believes Spurs will activate an extension clause in Heung-min Son’s contract to protect their financial interests.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hutton suggests this move would allow Tottenham to command a significant transfer fee should Son leave in the future.
Son’s current contract expires in 2025, with Tottenham holding an option for a one-year extension.
No official announcement has been made regarding this option.
The 31-year-old South Korean, now captain under Ange Postecoglou, remains crucial to Spurs, having scored 17 Premier League goals last season.
Since joining in 2015, Son has become Tottenham’s fifth-highest goalscorer with 162 goals.
Despite links to clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, Son rejected a Middle Eastern transfer last summer (2023).
Hutton argues that triggering the extension clause would be a strategic move for Tottenham.
He told Football Insider: “The club included this clause to protect themselves. By exercising it, they’ll secure two more seasons and can demand an appropriate fee if transfer interest arises.”
He added, “Son still has much to offer, whether as a striker or on the left wing.
While Tottenham’s striker plans remain uncertain, with rumors about potential signings like Toney, Son’s role as captain makes it illogical to let his contract run down.”
