Keith Wyness, ex-CEO of Everton and current football consultancy advisor, suggests Leeds United may be compelled to sell left-back Junior Firpo this summer.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness highlighted the challenges Leeds face in renewing Firpo’s contract, which expires in 12 months, despite his value to their promotion ambitions.
Firpo, who joined Leeds from Barcelona four years ago, overcame early-season injuries to become integral to the team’s promotion push. However, Leeds fell short in the play-off final against Southampton.
Wyness pointed out Leeds’ significant transfer debt, reportedly £180 million, as a factor complicating their financial decisions.
He noted that while Firpo could be a key asset for Championship success, Leeds might need to capitalize on his transfer value now to avoid losing him for free next year.
The club faces similar dilemmas with several players, according to Wyness.
He emphasized the complex financial balancing act facing Leeds’ CEO, Angus Kinnear, as the club juggles promotion aspirations with financial prudence.
Wyness acknowledged the support of Leeds’ ownership group but stressed the need for sound financial management.
He concluded that the ultimate decision on Firpo’s future will rest with the club’s top-level directors, as they navigate the pressures of seeking promotion while maintaining financial stability.
