AliousAtalanta BC has secured the services of Everton’s Ben Godfrey for an estimated £10m.
The 26-year-old defender, who nearly joined the Italian club in January, has chosen Atalanta over Lyon, despite the French team’s higher bid of £12.7m.
Godfrey, who joined Everton from Norwich City in 2020 for up to £25m, made 93 appearances for the Toffees.
After a slow start under Sean Dyche last season, he became a regular starter towards the end of the campaign.
The England international, capped twice, expressed his gratitude to Everton fans on Instagram, reflecting on his four years at Goodison Park.
He also shared his excitement about joining Atalanta, the 2023-24 Europa League winners managed by Gian Piero Gasperini.
Atalanta welcomed Godfrey as their second summer signing, following Charles De Ketelaere’s permanent move from AC Milan.
Both Everton and Atalanta released statements wishing Godfrey well in his new venture.
This transfer is expected to help Everton’s financial situation, particularly in relation to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
