AliousDele Alli, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, is currently without a club.
The midfielder has rejoined Everton for pre-season preparations, continuing his rehabilitation at their Finch Farm facility. He hasn’t played competitively in over a year.
Alli’s contract with Everton concluded at the end of the 2023-24 season. He had moved to Goodison Park from Spurs on the final day of the January 2022 transfer window.
Then-manager Frank Lampard took a chance on Alli, whose form had significantly declined at Tottenham after being previously hailed as one of Europe’s brightest talents.
Unfortunately, Everton couldn’t reignite Alli’s best form.
While he made a notable impact as a substitute in the crucial 3-2 win over Crystal Palace that ensured Premier League survival, he generally struggled to make his mark.
After 13 appearances for Everton, Alli was loaned to Besiktas for the 2022-23 season. However, his time in Turkey was also unsuccessful and was cut short due to hip surgery in April 2023.
Last summer, Alli sought treatment at a rehabilitation clinic in the US for sleeping pill addiction.
He also courageously shared his experiences of childhood abuse and being forced into drug dealing at a young age.
Unable to return to play in 2023-24, Alli underwent another operation for a groin problem around the turn of the year.
Despite his contract expiring, Everton is supporting Alli’s return to full fitness.
The club is committed to aiding his recovery as the 28-year-old aims for a comeback.
Kevin Thelwell, Everton’s Director of Football, emphasized the club’s commitment to Alli’s rehabilitation, regardless of his contract status.
During a Sky Sports punditry appearance last season, Alli expressed his ambition to regain a place in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup.
