AliousNick Barmby’s transfer from Everton to Liverpool in 2000 was highly controversial.
Barmby had joined Everton in 1996 for a club-record fee and performed well, especially in his final season.
However, after failed contract negotiations, he shocked Everton by moving to rival Liverpool for £6 million.
This was the first direct player sale between the clubs since 1959.
Everton manager Walter Smith and chairman Bill Kenwright were stunned.
Kenwright called it his “lowest low,” saying Barmby’s words “I want to play for Liverpool” were devastating.
Reactions were mixed. Jamie Carragher felt it was understandable for a non-local player seeking trophies.
Michael Ball, an Everton defender, saw it as betrayal but acknowledged Barmby’s lack of local ties made it possible.
Barmby scored against Everton in his first derby for Liverpool and won three trophies that season.
Many Evertonians never forgave him, but Barmby expressed no regrets years later.
He cited his expiring contract, Liverpool’s European football, and his admiration for Kenny Dalglish as reasons for the move.
Barmby maintained he enjoyed his time at both clubs and was proud to have played for such big teams, despite understanding the controversy his decision caused.
