Newcastle United has shown late interest in RB Leipzig’s versatile defender Mohamed Simakan as the transfer window nears its close.

Leipzig is willing to negotiate a deal for Simakan, who has attracted attention from several clubs including Newcastle, Barcelona, Liverpool, and Saudi Arabian teams.

While Newcastle remains optimistic about signing Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, they’ve also been monitoring Simakan, who has a €70 million release clause.

Leipzig might consider offers below this amount if received before Friday’s deadline.Simakan’s versatility is appealing, as he can play both center-back and right-back.

This flexibility could be particularly valuable for Newcastle, especially if Kieran Trippier leaves the club.

Despite ongoing negotiations for Guehi, Newcastle hasn’t secured a deal yet.

Palace is reportedly asking £70 million for Guehi, who has two years left on his contract.

Newcastle’s sporting director Paul Mitchell is familiar with Leipzig from his previous work there, though he had left before Simakan’s arrival in 2021.

However, manager Eddie Howe has downplayed the likelihood of Newcastle signing both a central defender and a right-winger before the transfer window closes.
