AliousIsaac Schmidt, a versatile defender with triple nationality, has completed a permanent move from FC St. Gallen in the Swiss Super League to Leeds United in the English Championship.
Born in Lausanne to a Swiss-German father and Nigerian mother, Schmidt is eligible to represent Switzerland, Germany, or Nigeria internationally.
Leeds United officially announced Schmidt’s signing on their website, confirming a four-year contract that runs until 2028.
The club has acquired a highly versatile player capable of playing various positions, including left-back, right wing, wing-back, defensive midfield, right-back, and central midfield, though he primarily operates as a left fullback.
FC St. Gallen’s President, Matthias Hüppi, stated that Schmidt’s transfer to Leeds is the most financially significant in the club’s history, making him the most expensive player ever sold by St. Gallen since its founding in 1879.
During his three-year stint at St. Gallen following a move from Lausanne-Sport, Schmidt became a key player, appearing in 108 matches and contributing seven goals and ten assists.
In his final appearance for St. Gallen, Schmidt played a crucial role in the club’s qualification for the Conference League group stage.
He scored the opening goal in a match against Trabzonspor, which St. Gallen won via a penalty shootout, though Schmidt was substituted before the shootout began.
For the remainder of the 2024-2025 season, Schmidt will wear the number 33 jersey at Leeds United.
