AliousFortuna Dusseldorf had to sell Ao Tanaka to Leeds United on the transfer deadline day, after Leeds made an improved offer for the Japanese midfielder.
Tanaka made his Leeds debut in their 2-0 win over Hull City just a day after completing the move.
Initially, Fortuna Dusseldorf were not planning to sell Tanaka and rejected Leeds’ initial €2.5 million bid.
The German club wanted €4 million for the player. However, Tanaka was keen on the move to Leeds, and Leeds eventually matched Fortuna Dusseldorf’s asking price, surprising the German club.
Fortuna Dusseldorf had to accept the €4 million offer as Tanaka only had a year left on his contract, and they were not in a position to reject such an offer towards the end of the transfer window.
The final deal involves an initial €3.5 million fee plus €500,000 in add-ons.
