AliousAccording to sources speaking to Football Insider, Liverpool and Newcastle United may need to trigger a release clause to acquire Marc Guehi if he signs a new contract with Crystal Palace.
Football Insider reported on September 2 that Palace plans to initiate contract talks with Guehi following the closure of the transfer window on August 30. The club is now focusing on future planning.
Both Liverpool and Newcastle are interested in Guehi, with Newcastle having made a bid of around £70 million during the summer window, which Palace rejected.
Any new buyout clause is expected to exceed this amount and will determine the payment structure of potential deals.
Guehi’s current Palace contract expires in June 2026, and the club is eager to secure a longer-term commitment.
However, sources indicate that Guehi and his representatives will insist on including a release clause in any new contract.
This situation is reminiscent of Michael Olise’s previous Palace contract, which included a buyout clause that Bayern Munich activated earlier in the summer.
Guehi, who captains Palace, has played every minute of the club’s four matches in the 2023-24 season so far.
His value has increased over the past year as he’s become a regular in the England national team, playing in all but one game at Euro 2024.
