Crystal Palace’s struggles persist after a disappointing 1-1 draw against struggling Wolves at Molineux this weekend. In light of this result, prominent commentator Richard Keys has floated England’s former manager Gareth Southgate as a potential successor to current boss Oliver Glasner.
Though Palace managed to secure a point through Marc Guehi’s late equalizer from a set piece, their precarious position – hovering just two points above the relegation zone in 17th place after ten matches – has intensified scrutiny on Glasner’s leadership.
While Glasner isn’t facing immediate dismissal, his position has become increasingly tenuous in recent weeks, particularly given the availability of seasoned Premier League managers David Moyes and Graham Potter. Keys, however, has introduced a new dimension to the succession discussion by suggesting Southgate, who received high praise from England star Jude Bellingham as an “unbelievable human being.”
Glasner’s tenure, which began in February following Roy Hodgson’s departure, initially showed promise with an impressive run of six victories in their final seven league matches last season. Despite losing star player Michael Olise to Bayern Munich, the club backed Glasner substantially in the transfer market, bringing in several high-profile signings including Eddie Nketiah, Daichi Kamada, and Ismaila Sarr.
Pre-season expectations of competing for European qualification have fallen flat, prompting Keys to observe on his blog: “Palace stumble on. One minute you think they’ve sorted things out, then they slip up again. Gareth Safegate?”
Southgate, currently available after concluding his England tenure this summer, could find the Palace opportunity appealing. Previous GIVEMESPORT reports suggest Palace had already shown interest in the former Middlesbrough manager, making this a potentially viable succession plan if Glasner’s results don’t improve.
Their managerial records show similar win percentages, with Glasner achieving 49% across 408 games compared to Southgate’s 46% in 290 matches, though Glasner has managed significantly more games overall.
