The managerial merry-go-round in the Premier League has claimed another victim, with Leicester City dismissing Steve Cooper after a mere 12-match stint at the helm. The decision comes with the Foxes hovering precariously in 16th place, their latest defeat – a 2-1 loss to Chelsea – extending a troubling five-game winless streak.
Cooper, who had arrived with a reputation as a miracle worker after his heroics at Nottingham Forest, was backed substantially in the transfer market with over £45 million spent. Yet despite this investment, Leicester’s hierarchy has pulled the trigger remarkably early in his tenure. His entire coaching team, including assistant Alan Tate and analyst Steve Rands, have also departed, with Ben Dawson temporarily taking the reins while the club searches for a permanent replacement.
The decision feels particularly poignant given Cooper’s remarkable journey at his previous club. At Forest, he had transformed an underperforming side into promotion winners within eight months, ending their 23-year Premier League exile. He followed that by securing top-flight survival against considerable odds before his tenure there ended last December amid their own relegation struggles.
The swift nature of Leicester’s decision raises eyebrows, especially considering their significant summer investment in Cooper’s vision. Training duties will now be shared between Dawson and fellow coaches Danny Alcock and Andy Hughes as the club aims for a quick managerial appointment.
