During the summer transfer window, Leeds United’s managing director Angus Kinnear revealed the club’s extensive search for a creative midfielder. Their ambitions included a potential move for Aston Villa’s Emi Buendia, though the player ultimately rejected the opportunity. Other targets like Gus Hamer and Roland Sallai were also considered but not secured.
The primary transfer target emerging is James McAtee from Manchester City. Despite being a promising young talent, McAtee has found playing time extremely limited under Pep Guardiola this season. The player is reportedly seeking a move that will provide more consistent game time and has already held discussions with Guardiola about potential January transfer options.
Give Me Sport suggests that Manchester City might be prepared to sell McAtee for around £20 million, with multiple clubs expressing interest. Currently, Crystal Palace and West Ham appear to be the most likely destinations, positioning themselves as frontrunners for the young midfielder’s signature.
However, Leeds United face significant challenges in securing McAtee. The player has demonstrated Premier League capability during his loan spell at Sheffield United last season and would likely prioritize a move to a top-flight club. Leeds’ current Championship status potentially diminishes their appeal, making a transfer complicated.
The analysis suggests that McAtee would only seriously consider Leeds if his options become limited towards the end of the transfer window. With at least 12 clubs monitoring his situation, and his proven ability at the highest level, he is expected to have more attractive options.
