Pierre Ekwah is currently on loan at Saint-Etienne from Sunderland, and he has been discussing his potential future with the French club. Despite being on loan, Ekwah feels a strong connection to Saint-Etienne, stating, “I feel like I belong to Saint-Etienne. In my head, I’m not on loan.”
The loan deal includes an option for Saint-Etienne to make the transfer permanent next summer for approximately £6 million, with a seven-figure loan fee already paid. Ekwah is uncertain about his long-term future, saying, “Will I stay? I can’t give an answer. In my mind, the question of staying is on the table.”
Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman previously noted that the loan move was initiated with Ekwah’s agreement, highlighting the player’s development from an Under-21 player to a Championship midfielder. Speakman indicated that the club would reassess Ekwah’s situation next summer.
The loan move also allowed Sunderland to bring in midfielders Samis Abdul Samed and Milan Aleksic on deadline day. Ekwah has been a regular in the Saint-Etienne lineup this season, making 10 appearances in Ligue 1 so far.
