AliousWith the January transfer window officially open, speculation about Jordan Henderson’s potential return to Sunderland has reignited, but the former Black Cats academy graduate has already provided a definitive response to the rumors.
Henderson, who left Sunderland for Liverpool in 2011 for £20 million, achieved legendary status at Anfield, captaining the Reds to multiple trophies, including the Champions League and Premier League. After his illustrious Liverpool career, Henderson moved to Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia for a reported fee of £13 million and an eye-watering weekly wage of £350,000. However, his stint in Saudi Arabia was short-lived as he joined Dutch giants Ajax last January.
Reports suggested that Sunderland was considering bringing their hometown hero back to Wearside, with Henderson allegedly open to the idea. However, Henderson himself has dismissed the speculation, stating his commitment to Ajax.
“It’s my club, ever since I was a boy of six or seven years old. Then I was in the stands,” Henderson said about Sunderland. “But I just hope I stay here [at Ajax]. I really like it here. I want to help the club to grow further. We are also taking those steps. But I also read it. I don’t even know where all this comes from, because there has been no contact.”
Echoing Henderson’s sentiments, Ajax sporting director Alex Kroes also downplayed any chance of a January departure. “I am extremely satisfied with Jordan as captain, both on and off the pitch,” Kroes told Dutch outlet *Algemeen Dagblad*. “So, we don’t want to lose him. We assume he will help us continue the further development we are currently going through as a club and a team.”
Despite the fond memories and deep ties Henderson has with Sunderland, his focus remains firmly on his role at Ajax, leaving fans on Wearside to wonder if a return might ever materialize in the future.
