AliousRégis Le Bris expressed his delight as Sunderland’s tactical adjustment proved decisive in their victory over Sheffield United. However, he cautioned that their alternative approach may not always be the right solution for future games.
Due to a long list of unavailable players, Le Bris opted for a 4-4-2 formation on New Year’s Day. This setup allowed Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor to shine, with both players finding the back of the net. The decision was partly driven by the limitations of his squad but also tailored to exploit Sheffield United’s preference for controlling midfield possession.
“We discussed several options with the staff,” Le Bris explained. “Ultimately, we felt this formation was the most effective given the pace we had through the middle and our ability to defend as a cohesive unit. Sheffield United like to dominate the central areas of the pitch. If we could recover possession there, our speed on the counter would be a significant advantage. It was exciting to see that strategy pay off.”
Le Bris added, “This approach showed we can adapt, defend well in a compact block, and then exploit the space behind the opposition. It was almost like a 4-4-2 in execution, and it’s promising to know we can use this style when necessary. It’s not something we’ve typically done, but it’s now a viable option for the future.”
Adapting for Future Matches
Despite the success against Sheffield United, Le Bris hinted that the same formation might not be used when Sunderland faces Portsmouth on Sunday.
“Every match presents unique challenges,” he said. “What worked against Sheffield United may not be suitable for Portsmouth. The opponent and game dynamics are always different. Still, it’s reassuring to know we can adapt and utilize this strategy when needed.”
Le Bris acknowledged that the 4-4-2 formation had been trialed briefly in a previous home game, which planted the idea that it could be effective in certain scenarios.
Praise for Isidor
Le Bris also singled out Wilson Isidor for his game-winning goal, describing it as a moment of brilliance.
“Wilson’s goal was fantastic,” Le Bris said. “He went through a spell of six or seven games without scoring, which may have created some doubts. But we’ve always believed in his ability to deliver goals like that. It’s a matter of consistency, and as a coach, it’s my job to continue supporting and trusting our players.”
Sunderland’s ability to adapt tactically and rely on key players like Isidor bodes well as they navigate the challenges ahead, starting with Sunday’s clash against Portsmouth.
