Leeds United Blow: EPL Star Drops Major Hint About Joining Sunderland Over Elland Road Move

Leeds United’s pursuit of Aston Villa’s rising star Louie Barry has taken a twist, with the 21-year-old signaling a preference for Sunderland, according to TEAMtalk sources.

While the Whites remain keen on securing Barry’s services, the young forward’s recent Instagram activity has fueled speculation about a move to the Stadium of Light instead.

Barry, who dazzled in the first half of the season on loan at Stockport County, racking up an impressive 16 goals in 24 games, was recently recalled by Aston Villa.

Unai Emery confirmed the recall was a strategic move to secure the player a loan at a higher level, likely in the Championship. Leeds, Sunderland, Sheffield United, and Middlesbrough are reportedly vying for his signature.

Despite Leeds’ interest, the club’s depth in attacking positions and the intense competition for game time may work against them.

Barry’s Instagram interaction—liking a comment suggesting he join Sunderland—has added weight to rumors that Wearside could be his next destination.

In a heartfelt farewell post to Stockport fans, Barry expressed his gratitude:
“I’ve loved every second playing for County… You made me feel like one of your own, which was a special feeling. Hopefully, this isn’t the last time we cross paths, but I’ll be a fan for life.”

Villa boss Unai Emery, while praising Barry’s potential, stated that the club’s priority is ensuring his continued development:
“He’s performing very well… If his progression is better on loan at a higher level, that’s the plan.

We’re happy with him and want to help him grow further.”

Barry’s future destination remains undecided, but his preference for Sunderland and their ability to offer consistent game time could give the Black Cats the edge in this transfer battle.

Meanwhile, Leeds may shift focus to other targets, including Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi, whose potential summer move continues to generate interest.
