Other names are wanted at the Stadium of Light too. Louie Barry is also liked by Sunderland but Aston Villa want a new contract for the winger before sending him out on loan in this month’s transfer window.

In three seasons at Rangers, left-sided winger Matondo has featured 44 times in the Scottish Premiership, scoring seven goals and grabbing three assists. But in this 2024/25 campaign, Matondo has two goals and two assists after just six games. His best ever season came with Cercle Brugge in 2021/22. On Wednesday night, Rangers beat Aberdeen 3-0 in the Scottish Premiership. But Matondo was nowhere to be seen, left out the match day squad entirely amid rumours that he’s leaving Ibrox.

Afterwards the game, boss Phillippe Clement was asked about Matondo and his situation at Rangers. He said: “I can say about Rabbi that I made a choice, a sporting choice today to put two young lads (Bailey Rice and Zakariya Lovelace) on the bench because I think they are performing for the moment better.”Now with confirmation that Matondo is free to leave, it opens the door for Sunderland to swoop in and potentially make him their second signing of the January transfer window so far.

But not to forget, Matondo may already have a move to Europe lined up, and it could now be a matter of time. Expect to see some more on the winger in the coming days.
