AliousLeeds United are reportedly in a favorable position to secure the signing of Tottenham defender Ben Davies, but they may have to wait until the summer unless Spurs agree to a January deal.
On Football Insider’s *Inside Track* podcast, former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who maintains close ties to the club, shared his thoughts on the potential transfer. Robinson believes the 31-year-old Wales international could be a valuable addition to Leeds, describing him as a “good fit” for Elland Road.
Davies is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and has made just 11 appearances for Spurs across all competitions this season. However, Leeds are actively seeking defensive reinforcements as manager Daniel Farke aims to lead the club back to the Premier League.
Reports suggest that while Davies was initially content to remain at Tottenham and see out his contract, a move to Leeds has become a possibility. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, January represents Spurs’ last chance to cash in on the experienced defender, giving Leeds an advantageous position in negotiations.
Robinson elaborated on why Davies would be a smart acquisition for Leeds:
“What is he? He’s 31 now, and his contract is up at the end of the season. Leeds need cover at centre-back and left-back, especially with Firpo’s situation. It’s a deal that could make sense because of his experience and versatility.”
However, Robinson also acknowledged potential obstacles. Tottenham may be reluctant to sell Davies mid-season due to their own lack of defensive depth. He explained:
“The money Spurs could get for Davies—whether through a loan fee or permanent transfer—likely won’t outweigh their need for cover in those positions until the end of the season. Tottenham are already short in that area.”
While a January move seems uncertain, Robinson suggested the transfer could gain traction in the summer, particularly if Leeds secure promotion.
“Looking ahead, if Leeds make it back to the Premier League next season, it could be an appealing option for both Davies and the club. But at the moment, I don’t see how Tottenham would agree to a deal when they’re in such desperate need of defensive cover.”
For now, the situation remains fluid, with Leeds keeping a close eye on the experienced defender as the January transfer window progresses.
