Championship Drama: Sunderland Transfer Target Caught Scouting New Team – Big Move Is Imminent

Sunderland transfer target Ben Brereton Diaz was spotted at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane over the weekend, signaling his expected return to the club. The Chilean international, who has twice commanded transfer fees of £7 million, bringing his career total to £14 million, had been linked to Sunderland and other clubs as he seeks regular first-team football after limited opportunities at Southampton.

However, the 25-year-old forward now seems destined for a move back to Sheffield United. Reports suggest he prefers the Steel City to be closer to his family and to reunite with Chris Wilder, under whom he had a successful loan spell in the Premier League last season. While on loan from Villarreal, Brereton Diaz netted six goals for the Blades, though it wasn’t enough to prevent their relegation to the Championship. His return to Bramall Lane represents a significant boost for the club, as his proven goal-scoring ability in the second tier could help propel their promotion push.

Confirmation of the transfer seems imminent, with footage surfacing online of the player in attendance at Bramall Lane during Sheffield United’s clash with Norwich City. Social media user @oscarsufc shared a video appearing to show Diaz at the stadium, aligning with earlier reports from *The Star* that the player was expected to watch the game as final preparations for his transfer were being made.

In addition to Diaz, Sheffield United are working on securing Leicester City striker Tom Cannon, who recently returned from a productive loan spell at Stoke City. The Blades have reportedly offered an upfront fee of around £10 million for Cannon, putting them in pole position for his signature.

While Sunderland had shown interest in structuring a deal similar to their acquisition of Enzo Le Fée—where a permanent move would hinge on achieving promotion to the Premier League—Sheffield United’s willingness to offer immediate financial commitment seems to have given them the edge. Diaz’s imminent arrival will add firepower to the Blades as they look to climb the Championship table.
