Rusyn is reportedly nearing a loan move to Hajduk Split, a decision that won’t shock many given his limited game time this season. However, the striker’s struggles to cement his place in the squad can be traced back to a pointed comment made by Sunderland coach Mike Dodds last season.

Rusyn’s imminent switch to Croatia is unlikely to surprise Sunderland insiders, especially Mike Dodds. A key figure in Le Bris’ coaching team, Dodds had previously acknowledged the challenges Rusyn faced during Sunderland’s disastrous 2023/24 season. Yet, he had also hinted at increased expectations for the forward heading into the current campaign. 

Reflecting on Rusyn’s situation, Dodds told the *Sunderland Echo* last season: “Pre-season [2024/25] is going to be crucial for him. His family is now with him, his language skills have improved, and he’s more settled in the region with a home. With those factors in place, there’ll be more pressure on him, but I think we’ll get a clearer picture of his abilities as a player.” 

Unfortunately, Rusyn has failed to live up to those expectations, making his departure seem almost inevitable. 

### Rusyn’s Time at Sunderland Appears Over 
It’s difficult to argue that Rusyn’s stint at Sunderland has been anything but underwhelming. In 29 Championship appearances—mostly as a substitute—the 26-year-old managed just two goals. While his talent has never been in question, his struggles to adapt to life in England seem to have held him back. 

The deal with Hajduk Split reportedly includes an option to buy, meaning Sunderland will either cash in on Rusyn permanently or look to offload him elsewhere at a later date. 

For many Sunderland fans, there’s hope that Rusyn can rediscover his form in Croatia and revive his career. However, it’s clear that his future no longer aligns with the Black Cats’ plans.
