Sunderland’s efforts to retain star midfielder Dan Neil may face challenges due to a critical issue looming over the club.

### A Quiet January Window
The Black Cats started the January transfer window on a high note, securing Roma’s Enzo Le Fee on loan, but momentum has since stalled. Despite pursuing players like Tom Cannon, Ben Brereton Diaz, and Chuba Akpom, Sunderland have yet to finalize further signings, showing hesitation to bring in reinforcements before the window closes.

### Premier League Interest in Dan Neil
Adding to Sunderland’s concerns is growing interest in their current players, particularly team captain Dan Neil, who has attracted attention from Premier League sides Everton and West Ham. While a move seems unlikely at the moment, Neil’s unresolved contract situation could make retaining him more complicated.

The 21-year-old has been pivotal for Sunderland this season, thriving in a new defensive midfield role under manager Regis Le Bris. After a slow start, Neil has emerged as one of the standout performers, with his elegance and composure drawing interest from top-flight clubs.

### Contract Concerns
Journalist Phil Smith highlighted the issue in a Q&A with the *Sunderland Echo*, stating:
“It’s definitely a bit of a concern given that his contract situation remains unresolved, and he has now entered the last 18 months of his deal. But as Le Bris explained so well in his press conference yesterday, the club has to be willing to sell in this window and the player has to want to leave.”

Neil’s current deal is set to expire at the end of next season, leaving Sunderland in a precarious position if no extension is agreed upon soon.

### A Critical Move for Sunderland’s Ambition
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman has shown ambition in the transfer market, targeting high-caliber Championship players to strengthen the squad. However, ensuring the long-term future of key talents like Neil must also be a priority.

Sunderland remains an appealing destination for players, both current and prospective, but Speakman must act swiftly to secure Neil’s future. A contract extension for the skipper would signal the club’s intent to keep its best players and continue building toward long-term success.

### A Key Decision Ahead
Neil has been a standout performer, with many praising his “elegance” and leadership this season. While Sunderland holds the advantage in negotiations, locking him into a new deal would solidify their ambitions and fend off interest from Premier League suitors. For Sunderland, the time to act is now.
