AliousCrystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner admitted he had no objections to the controversial VAR decision that allowed Bryan Mbeumo to retake a crucial penalty during Brentford’s 2-1 win. The penalty was awarded after Maxence Lacroix brought down Nathan Collins in the box.
Initially, Mbeumo struck the post with his effort, and Marc Guehi cleared the ball out for a corner. However, VAR determined that Guehi had encroached into the penalty area before the kick was taken. After a lengthy four-minute review, the penalty was retaken, and Mbeumo calmly converted the second attempt, giving Brentford the lead.
Following Palace’s first loss in seven matches, Glasner acknowledged the decision was correct but expressed frustration with the circumstances that led to the penalty.
“It felt like a game where one mistake could decide the result, and unfortunately, we made too many errors in the buildup to the penalty—four mistakes in a row inside our own box,” Glasner said.
“The VAR decision was correct. Marc was half a yard or more inside the area, and that’s against the rules. What made it harder to accept was that Mbeumo hit the post, and the ball fell to him. If he’d touched it again, it would’ve been a free kick for us. But Marc being just a fraction too early allowed him to get to the ball before Mbeumo, and unfortunately, it resulted in the retake.”
Glasner added that while VAR got the call right, the penalty itself should never have been conceded. “We had multiple chances to clear the ball, but we failed to do so, and it’s frustrating. It’s a situation we should have handled better,” he concluded.
