Sunderland’s pursuit of a new striker has hit several roadblocks with the transfer window rapidly closing. Despite a month-long effort to secure a forward, the Black Cats are still struggling to make significant progress as Monday’s deadline approaches.
The club had early discussions with Ajax over a potential move for Chuba Akpom, but negotiations quickly stalled. Akpom’s impressive form and Ajax’s demands made the deal complicated, and the former Middlesbrough striker has now officially joined French side Lille. Lille’s progression in the Champions League made them a far more attractive destination, leaving Sunderland out of the race.
Will Lankshear was another target on Sunderland’s radar. However, the Tottenham Hotspur youngster opted for a season-long loan to West Bromwich Albion after being personally convinced by former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray. Mowbray’s influence helped West Brom beat out multiple Championship clubs vying for Lankshear’s signature.
Meanwhile, Louie Barry, who had been linked with Sunderland following an impressive loan spell at Stockport County, has returned to Aston Villa only to be immediately loaned out again—this time to Hull City. Hull, aggressively active in the market to secure Championship survival, secured Barry’s services for the remainder of the season.
Despite these setbacks, Sunderland remains determined to strengthen their attacking options. Matija Frigan of Westerlo is a prime target, though initial talks have yet to produce an agreement. While the Belgian club is open to selling the Croatian striker, Sunderland’s recruitment team is firm on not overpaying for the 21-year-old.
Preston North End’s Emil Riis is another name on Sunderland’s shortlist. The Danish forward has struggled for consistent game time this season and with his contract set to expire this summer, Preston might be tempted to sell now rather than risk losing him for free. However, Sunderland is cautious about meeting a high valuation for a player nearing free agency.
Lastly, the Black Cats have shown interest in Besiktas’ rising star Semih Kilicsoy. However, any loan deal for the 19-year-old would come with a hefty catch—an obligation to buy for over £15 million if Sunderland secures promotion to the Premier League.
