AliousEvan Ferguson’s first outing for West Ham didn’t deliver the dream debut he had hoped for, but the young striker remains optimistic that his loan spell with the Hammers will provide the “fresh start” he needs to develop his game.
Ferguson, who recently joined on loan from Brighton, was reunited with former Seagulls boss Graham Potter and made his first appearance for West Ham in their 1-0 home defeat to Brentford. Coming off the bench for the second half, he aimed to make an impact, but the result didn’t go in his team’s favor.
### **Settling In and Embracing Change**
Despite the disappointing result, Ferguson is embracing his new surroundings and sees the move as an opportunity to reset and grow as a player.
“I feel good, to be honest. It’s refreshing to be in a new environment, getting that fresh start,” Ferguson explained. “Working with Graham Potter again has been great. I already know him from his time at Brighton, but he’s come in with fresh ideas, and the transition has been smooth. It’s everything I could’ve asked for—now it’s about proving myself on the pitch.”
### **Making an Impact Off the Bench**
Reflecting on his debut, Ferguson acknowledged the team’s struggles in the first half but felt he and the other substitutes provided a much-needed boost after coming on.
“For me, it was great to finally get out there and wear the West Ham shirt, but we all know as a squad that we need to be better,” he admitted. “After the first half, we knew we had to step up. When you come off the bench, you want to influence the game, and I think the three of us who came on gave the team a lift. If we’re going to lose a game, at least we can say we fought hard in the second half.”
Despite the physical challenge posed by Brentford, Ferguson felt well-prepared thanks to the team’s training sessions during the week.
### **Looking Ahead to Arsenal**
West Ham’s next test is another tough London derby, this time against high-flying Arsenal. Ferguson is under no illusions about the challenge ahead but remains hopeful that his side can pull off a result.
“We’re looking forward to it. Arsenal are in top form right now, but anything can happen in football,” he said.
With his first appearance under his belt, Ferguson will be eager to make a bigger impact as he continues his development at West Ham.
