AliousChelsea’s struggles have been mounting in recent weeks, with their form dipping as they slide down the Premier League table. However, despite their poor run of results, one of the club’s directors has made it clear that Enzo Maresca is not under any pressure regarding his future.
Jonathan Goldstein, a Chelsea director, has insisted that Maresca will remain in charge until the end of the season, emphasizing that the Italian is doing “a great job.” The Blues hired Maresca from Leicester last summer after parting ways with Mauricio Pochettino. Initially, his tenure seemed promising, with Chelsea sitting second in the table by December, sparking optimism that they could mount a title challenge. However, their form has since deteriorated, and they now find themselves battling to secure a top-four finish.
Chelsea’s recent record has been concerning, with just three wins in their last 11 matches across all competitions. Their best chance of winning silverware this season now lies in the Europa Conference League. Given the club’s recent managerial turnover—having sacked Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, and Pochettino in less than three years—there has been speculation about Maresca’s future. However, Goldstein has publicly backed the manager, telling BloombergTV:
“He is doing a great job. Chelsea started the season very well. The last six weeks have been about finding their feet again. But Enzo has clearly done a great job in bringing the team together, developing talent, and we’re very optimistic about the rest of the season.”
When asked if Maresca would see out the campaign, Goldstein confidently responded: “100 per cent.”
Chelsea’s most recent setbacks have come at the hands of Brighton, losing twice in quick succession at the Amex Stadium. Their first defeat saw them eliminated from the FA Cup, and just days later, they suffered a humiliating 3-0 league loss, with Kaoru Mitoma leading the charge to dismantle their defense.
Maresca admitted that the performance against Brighton was Chelsea’s worst since his arrival. Despite the club’s heavy investment in the squad, the team looked disjointed, and several key players have seen their form dip. Reflecting on the loss, Maresca told the club’s website:
“Since I arrived, this is probably the worst performance, especially considering the moment we are in. We were fourth in the league, and winning this match could have put us one point behind third while widening the gap behind us.
“The performance was not what we expect, and we are very upset—especially for the fans. In this situation, with 14 games remaining, now 13, we cannot afford to produce this kind of display. We need to show more desire.”
With Chelsea’s season hanging in the balance, Maresca’s future will likely remain a topic of discussion. While the club’s leadership has publicly backed him, continued struggles could put pressure on those assurances as the campaign unfolds.
