Brighton delivered a dominant display at St Mary’s Stadium, securing a resounding 4-0 victory over Southampton, marking their third consecutive win across all competitions. Goals from Joao Pedro, Georginio Rutter, Kaoru Mitoma, and Jack Hinshelwood ensured the Seagulls left no doubt about their superiority.
Fabian Hurzeler had faced scrutiny following Brighton’s humiliating 7-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in their last away match. However, his team responded in emphatic fashion, bouncing back with a convincing performance that followed back-to-back wins over Chelsea in the league and FA Cup.
Reflecting on the comprehensive victory, Hurzeler admitted that while he hadn’t anticipated such a dominant scoreline, he was delighted with his team’s execution. “You can never expect to win 4-0, but overall, we’re very happy with the performance,” the 31-year-old stated. “The key today was staying compact defensively, being sharp on second balls, and winning personal duels. There were moments where we struggled in midfield, but in general, I was pleased with how we played.”
Brighton could have won by an even larger margin, squandering several clear-cut chances that could have seen them hit double figures. Youngster Yankuba Minteh, in particular, was left frustrated after missing two golden opportunities.
Hurzeler acknowledged that their only real regret from the match was not being more ruthless in front of goal. “That’s probably the one thing we can be disappointed about today—we didn’t score more goals,” he admitted. “Ramsdale had an outstanding performance, making several top saves to keep the score down.
“Hopefully, we can maintain this momentum, continue creating chances, and be more clinical in converting them moving forward.”
