AliousDavid Moyes may have just made his first misstep since returning to Everton, as young striker Martin Sherif continues to send a strong message after being overlooked for the club’s recent warm-weather training camp in the United Arab Emirates.
Moyes, who took charge in January following Sean Dyche’s departure, has done an exceptional job at Goodison Park, guiding Everton on a seven-game unbeaten run and steering them away from relegation danger. His impact has been widely praised, but his decision to leave out Sherif from the trip to Abu Dhabi is now raising questions.
Despite being highly rated by Everton’s coaching staff and tipped for a bright future, Sherif was not included in the squad that traveled to the Middle East. However, instead of reacting negatively, the 18-year-old has responded in the best way possible—by continuing to score goals. The young forward has now netted in back-to-back games for Everton’s U21 side, most recently leading them to a 2-1 victory over Widnes.
Sherif has already been named on the senior bench multiple times this season, particularly during Everton’s struggles with injuries in the striker department, yet he has not been given a chance to make his senior debut. The warm-weather training camp seemed like the perfect opportunity for Moyes to get a closer look at him, but the call never came.
Compounding the situation, Armando Broja has returned to full training, which could make Sherif’s pathway to the first team even tougher. Nevertheless, the teenager is making his case loud and clear—he is ready for the next step.
Meanwhile, Beto’s recent performance against Brentford left a lot to be desired, as the striker missed crucial chances that could have secured Everton’s victory. With Sherif in excellent form, it’s possible that giving him an opportunity could have been a smarter choice.
Moyes has made very few mistakes since his return to Everton, but dismissing Sherif’s recent rise could prove to be one. The young striker is knocking on the door, and if he keeps delivering at this level, it may only be a matter of time before Moyes is forced to answer.
