AliousKevin Muscat, the current manager of Shanghai Port, has downplayed speculation regarding his future amid renewed links to the Rangers managerial position. Despite ongoing rumors that he could be a candidate to succeed Philippe Clement in the long run, Muscat remains focused on his current role in China.
The Australian coach, who previously interviewed for the Rangers job following Michael Beale’s dismissal, was ultimately passed over in favor of Clement. However, he continues to be seen as a strong contender for the position if it becomes available again. A recent poll conducted by the *Daily Record* among Rangers supporters ranked Muscat ahead of former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes, and interim manager Barry Ferguson as the preferred choice for the role.
At the moment, Muscat is preparing for a crucial Asian Champions League second-leg match against his former team, Yokohama F. Marinos. His Shanghai Port side faces a 1-0 deficit in Japan, and Muscat insists his sole priority is achieving success on the pitch. “In more than 30 years as a professional, I’ve learned that only one thing truly matters,” Muscat stated. “Right now, my full focus and energy are on ensuring my players have everything they need to perform well and win.”
Reflecting on his return to familiar surroundings in Japan, Muscat reiterated that his attention remains solely on the upcoming match. “It’s great to see familiar faces, even in this room, but my energy is fully dedicated to preparing for tomorrow’s game.”
Muscat was a strong contender for the Rangers job after two successful seasons at Yokohama, where he won the J1 League title. Since then, he has added more silverware to his resume by securing a league and cup double with Shanghai Port. His impressive achievements have kept him in discussions for a potential move back to Europe.
However, former Rangers defender Craig Moore has suggested that Muscat may not be interested in revisiting the opportunity if the club reaches out again. “He’s doing a fantastic job in Asia, and I expect that to continue,” Moore said. “I don’t see how things would align for him to take the Rangers job. If the club does make a change, I think Derek McInnes is the only realistic domestic option.”
Moore also acknowledged that Muscat was highly eager to take charge at Ibrox when he was interviewed twice before Clement’s appointment. “Of course, he was disappointed not to get the job,” Moore added. “He genuinely believed he could close the gap and make an impact at Rangers. But that chance went to Philippe, and there have been no discussions with Kevin since.”
