Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris may need to reconsider a key selection decision from the Black Cats’ recent draw against Preston North End, particularly as they gear up to face Coventry City this weekend.
Sunderland will be looking to bounce back after their 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light, where Jobe Bellingham’s performance left many fans unimpressed. Fortunately, Romaine Mundle came to the rescue, delivering a stunning last-minute equalizer with a brilliant strike into the top corner past former Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.
However, ahead of that match, Le Bris made several surprising lineup choices. He opted for a strike partnership of Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda, while Dennis Cirkin and Tommy Watson replaced Leo Hjelde and Mundle. The tactical reshuffle didn’t quite pay off, and as Sunderland prepares to take on Frank Lampard’s Coventry City at the CBS Arena, it seems likely that at least one of those changes will be reversed.
Mundle Deserves a Starting Spot Against Coventry
Given his impact against Preston, Le Bris should strongly consider restoring Mundle to the starting lineup. The young winger provided a much-needed spark when introduced for Watson, injecting energy into an attack that had looked lackluster for most of the game.
His presence made an immediate difference, and with Sunderland needing a stronger attacking edge against Coventry, it only makes sense for Mundle to start. This change would also likely mean Watson dropping back to the bench, a move that could benefit the youngster in the long run.
Watson Needs a Gradual Return to Full Fitness
Before his injury, Tommy Watson was in excellent form, just as Mundle himself had been sidelined for an extended period. However, despite Watson’s previous performances, his display against Preston suggested he is still working his way back to full match sharpness.
Rather than rushing him into the starting XI, Le Bris would be wise to reintroduce Watson gradually, ensuring that he regains his rhythm without unnecessary pressure. With plenty of competition for places on the left flank, Mundle’s return provides Sunderland with more flexibility, allowing Watson to be eased back into action with 20-25 minute cameos off the bench.
As Sunderland prepares for a tough test against Coventry, reinstating Mundle could be a crucial adjustment, giving the Black Cats the best chance to come away with a positive result.
