A victory over Celtic, particularly away from home, significantly boosts his case, but his success against Fenerbahce over two legs—featuring another outstanding away performance—has also strengthened his credentials. Ferguson has already silenced critics, including Brendan Rodgers, who suggested Rangers hadn’t changed under his leadership, by proving his ability to win tactical battles in high-stakes matches—something he had previously demonstrated against Jose Mourinho.
As 49ers Enterprises prepares for their takeover, Ferguson is giving them plenty to consider. If he can secure more major wins, including a Europa League clash with Athletic Bilbao and another derby at Ibrox after the league split, his case for the job will only grow stronger.
Steven Naismith believes Ferguson’s abilities are evident based on what he has achieved so far. However, the debate over whether he will stay in charge will continue up until the summer. Initially, Ferguson was not viewed as a long-term option, but his performances suggest he has a genuine opportunity to stake his claim.
One potential scenario could see the Rangers legend remain at the club in some capacity—perhaps as an assistant or coach under a more high-profile or experienced appointment. However, whether Ferguson would be comfortable stepping back into a supporting role after leading the team remains uncertain.
Former Celtic defender Johan Mjällby doubts Ferguson would accept a lesser position, telling *Premier Sports*: “It’s an interesting situation. He has a real chance, especially if Rangers perform well in big games between now and the end of the season.
“In the end, it’s up to Barry himself. He has proven he’s capable to the new owners. But if another manager is appointed, would he be willing to take a backseat role on the coaching staff?
“I’m not sure. I don’t think so. He has now had a taste of being in charge at a massive club, and it’s hard to step back into a number two role after that.
“Whoever comes in—if it’s not Ferguson—will need to bring in their own staff while also ensuring there are Rangers figures around them who understand the club.”
Meanwhile, Michael Stewart believes the American investors likely already have a preferred managerial candidate in mind but acknowledges that Ferguson’s performances could change their thinking.
“I’ve no doubt that the incoming owners have a clear idea of the type of manager they want,” Stewart said.
“Ferguson is in interim charge until the end of the season, and this period is his chance to make a case for himself.
“He may not ultimately get the job, but with every passing game, he is strengthening his argument. He is making a statement and forcing his way into the conversation.”
