AliousGraeme Souness, a revered figure in Rangers history, is being tipped for a sensational comeback to Ibrox, potentially alongside a legendary manager renowned for his success in the English Premier League.
The ex-player-manager, who still follows his old club closely, was seen at Ibrox earlier this month during interim boss Barry Ferguson’s first home match in charge—a loss to Motherwell.
Since then, Rangers have enjoyed a strong run, eliminating Fenerbahce from the Europa League and triumphing over Celtic in the Old Firm derby. However, with a takeover backed by the San Francisco 49ers on the horizon and no permanent manager in place, the club’s long-term direction remains unclear.
Derek Ferguson, brother of the interim manager, is eager to see Souness return to Ibrox. Following the recent involvement of former players like Barry Ferguson, Billy Dodds, Neil McCann, and Allan McGregor, he believes Souness possesses the ideal mindset to steer the club forward.
Souness previously played a role in the appointment of Philippe Clement as manager in 2023, and Derek feels his experience and passion make him a perfect fit.
Speaking to Ibrox News, Ferguson said Souness brings a commanding presence and deep understanding of the club, having quickly adapted after initially underestimating its demands during his first stint.
He described Souness as both passionate and astute—qualities the club has lacked and desperately needs.
Ferguson has long advocated for Souness to take on a behind-the-scenes role, arguing that even Clement should have embraced his expertise rather than feeling overshadowed by it.
But why stop at one big personality? Fenerbahce manager José Mourinho, ahead of his side’s Europa League clash with Rangers, hinted at his openness to managing either half of the Old Firm in the future.
Derek Ferguson sees this as an exciting possibility, suggesting that pairing Mourinho—known for his trophy-laden spells at Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester United—with Souness could be a game-changer.
He recalled watching Mourinho’s interview with his son, both of them exchanging glances the moment the Portuguese manager expressed interest.
Ferguson believes that with the impending takeover and Rangers’ consistent presence in European competitions, a figure of Mourinho’s stature could be lured to Ibrox.
While he wonders if Mourinho’s comments were partly mind games, he noted the manager’s genuine enthusiasm for the Celtic-Rangers rivalry after recently attending one of their matches.
Ferguson sees this as a golden opportunity, asking why Rangers shouldn’t aim for top-tier figures like Mourinho to help close the gap with Celtic. “What an appointment that would be,” he marveled, calling it “absolutely incredible.”
