AliousBrighton manager Fabian Hurzeler is optimistic that the international break has aided the recovery of several injured players as the team prepares for upcoming challenges.
Team captain Lewis Dunk has been sidelined for the past six games due to a rib injury picked up in the first half of Brighton’s FA Cup fourth-round victory over Chelsea.
The 33-year-old is eyeing a comeback for the FA Cup quarter-final against Nottingham Forest at the Amex Stadium this Saturday.
“He’s nearing a return, though he wasn’t ready before the break,” Hurzeler noted prior to the hiatus. “I’m hopeful the break has helped, and he’ll be fit to face Nottingham Forest.”
Dunk’s potential return would significantly strengthen Brighton as they approach the season’s critical phase.
However, Hurzeler is cautious about rushing him back, given Adam Webster’s impressive stand-in performances. “Webster’s a natural leader,”
Hurzeler praised earlier this month. “He’s always ready to step up for the team, offering support and guidance. He’s a vital voice and consistently delivers his best whenever called upon. It’s rare to see someone so prepared to shine instantly. He’s a solid alternative if Lewis isn’t available.”
Midfielder Solly March, absent for the recent 2-2 draw against Manchester City due to a muscle issue, is also aiming to return, alongside Matt O’Riley, who has been hampered by a knee problem and illness in the last two outings.
“Matt’s knee is still an issue,” Hurzeler remarked before the City game, “but the break could make him available for Nottingham Forest.”
Full-backs Joel Veltman (foot) and Tariq Lamptey (ankle) remain questionable, while Igor Julio (hamstring), James Milner (hamstring), Ferdi Kadioglu (toe), and Jason Steele (shoulder) are confirmed absentees.
Brighton’s South American contingent—Pervis Estupinan, Diego Gomez, and Joao Pedro—will need evaluation following their international duties with Ecuador, Paraguay, and Brazil, respectively, due to the lengthy travel involved.
Hurzeler remains upbeat, saying, “I believe their experiences will energize them. Hopefully, Diego, Pervis, and Joao return with wins under their belts, ready to contribute in the season’s final stretch. I’m confident this won’t negatively affect us.”
