AliousLeeds United appear to be keeping a keen eye on potential departures from Newcastle United this summer, having already been linked with striker Callum Wilson.
Earlier this year, during the January transfer window, the Whites reportedly showed interest in Newcastle’s left-back Matt Targett, though no deal materialized.
While Newcastle permitted Lloyd Kelly to join Juventus in the same window, it’s unlikely they would have let another left-sided defender depart so soon after. However, with a significant squad reshuffle anticipated at St. James’ Park this summer—including both arrivals and exits—Targett could be among those on the move.
Targett, who joined Newcastle permanently for £15m after a productive loan from Aston Villa, has struggled to replicate his initial form.
Injuries have plagued his stint with the Magpies, often sidelining him and fueling speculation that he’s no longer essential to the squad.
Leeds, who considered a move for him in January, continue to monitor his situation. Journalist Graeme Bailey recently provided an update to LeedsUnited.news, noting that manager Daniel Farke remains intrigued by the 29-year-old.
“Matt Targett is still on the radar for several clubs,” Bailey said. “He’s almost certain to leave Newcastle this summer, and the club won’t block his exit.
There’s interest from America, but Leeds have definitely kept him in their sights.”
With Leeds on track for a return to the Premier League, they’re prioritizing signings with top-flight experience to bolster their chances of survival—making Targett an appealing fit.
That said, a switch to the MLS could also suit him, offering a less physically demanding environment that might help him stay injury-free.
His departure from Newcastle this summer seems increasingly inevitable; the only questions left are his next destination and how much of that £15m investment Newcastle can recoup.
