Brøndby IF sporting director Benjamin Schmedes has urged young left-back Clement Bischoff to emerge stronger following the breakdown of his anticipated transfer to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion.
Speaking to Viaplay, Schmedes reflected on the 19-year-old’s recent struggles after what had seemed like a promising move to England fell through. Bold.dk reported the comments, which come weeks after the winter transfer window closed with negotiations between Brøndby and Brighton reaching an advanced stage.
In February, Tipsbladet revealed that Bischoff had traveled to the UK for medical assessments in preparation for a summer switch to The Amex Stadium. However, the deal ultimately collapsed at the final hurdle due to a last-minute disagreement between the clubs.
Following the failed transfer, Bischoff—who represents Denmark at U21 level—publicly expressed his disappointment. Brøndby head coach Frederik Birk also acknowledged the emotional toll the situation had taken on the teenager.
Schmedes, however, remains optimistic about Bischoff’s future. “He’s still a very young player, and these experiences, though tough, are part of his development,” he said. “If he comes through this—and I believe he will—it will only build his resilience and character as a footballer.”
Meanwhile, former Danish international and current Viaplay pundit Thomas Gravesen took a more critical view, labeling the failed move a major setback—not just for Bischoff, but for Schmedes himself.
“It’s been close to catastrophic,” Gravesen told Tipsbladet. “Schmedes was brought in to position Brøndby as a club that develops and sells talent to the Premier League. He couldn’t get the deal done, even with Bischoff practically on Brighton’s doorstep. For me, it’s a disaster.”
As the dust settles, the focus now turns to Bischoff’s response—both mentally and on the pitch—as he aims to revive his trajectory and keep his Premier League ambitions alive.
