Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has delivered a major boost ahead of Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Brentford, confirming that star winger Kaoru Mitoma is on track to return from injury. The Japan international missed last weekend’s disappointing 2-2 draw against struggling Leicester City due to a heel injury picked up during Albion’s narrow 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace. It was the first Premier League game Mitoma has missed this season—a testament to his importance, having contributed eight goals and three assists so far.
Mitoma’s recovery couldn’t come at a better time for Brighton, who currently sit 10th in the league and are chasing a European qualification spot with just six matches remaining. The 27-year-old’s return also comes amid reports linking him with a potential summer move to Liverpool, adding intrigue to his comeback.
In a press conference laced with optimism, Hurzeler praised the squad’s overall progress, especially on the injury front. “The big word today is positivity,” he said. “Kaoru is back, JP [Jan Paul van Hecke] is back, and several others are nearing the end of their rehab and should rejoin training next week. That’s a very positive message for all of us.”
Despite some long-term absentees, including James Milner (hamstring) and Ferdi Kadioglu (toe), Hurzeler remains hopeful they may feature before season’s end. “There’s a chance,” he noted with cautious optimism.
Looking ahead, the Brighton boss called for a composed but motivated reaction to the recent draw at the Amex. “I’ve seen strong reactions in training. The players are working incredibly hard. It’s important to channel that energy positively—enjoy the game and stay relaxed. When you force things, decision-making suffers.”
