Former Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has found himself at the center of a heated public spat with ex-Newcastle United icon Faustino Asprilla, as tensions boil over following Morelos’ controversial comments after a recent defeat with Atletico Nacional.
The row began after Morelos clashed with a fan during his side’s 3-1 loss to Deportivo Cali, reacting furiously when substituted and appearing to challenge the supporter to a fight. In the aftermath, the Colombian forward vented his frustrations, suggesting that domestic rivals treat fixtures against Nacional like a cup final.
“Every team seems to give their absolute all against us,” Morelos stated. “It’s as if facing Nacional means everything to them. Still, we remain committed to our footballing philosophy, with humility and respect.”
However, those remarks did not sit well with Asprilla, now a prominent pundit in Colombia. The former Colombia international fired back, branding Morelos “naive” and reminding him that elite clubs around the world are always targeted by opponents seeking a scalp.
“This isn’t something new. In every country, teams want to beat the giants,” Asprilla snapped. “In Argentina, it’s River and Boca; in Brazil, it’s Flamengo. Alfredo is either too sensitive or hasn’t been paying attention to how football works. He needs to grow up.”
The escalating war of words has put Morelos under the spotlight once again in Colombia, where his temperament and recent performances have drawn increasing scrutiny. Asprilla’s sharp critique adds further pressure on the former Ibrox star as he continues to navigate a turbulent start to his career in Colombian football.
