While much of the attention has been placed on strengthening the forward line—amid questions over Joel Piroe’s Premier League readiness and fresh links to Ipswich Town’s George Hirst—defensive reinforcements are also under consideration. Although the trio of Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk, and Ethan Ampadu has formed a reliable defensive spine, the uncertain future of Max Wöber has prompted Leeds to consider adding another centre-back.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Whites have set their sights on Nottingham Forest’s Andrew Omobamidele. The 22-year-old, currently on loan at Ligue 1 club Strasbourg, has impressed during his time in France. However, the French outfit reportedly hold a purchase option, which could throw a wrench in Leeds’ pursuit of the Irish defender.
Omobamidele brings plenty of upside. A composed presence at the back with good technical ability, he has long been tipped for a breakout. But despite his promise, he has yet to establish himself as a consistent starter at senior level. In fact, he has only managed one season where he featured in more than 20 games, raising questions over his readiness for the demands of Premier League football.
Leeds will need to weigh the risks carefully. Investing heavily in a defender still finding his footing could backfire if immediate results are needed. However, if the deal is structured prudently and the club remains patient with his development, Omobamidele could grow into a key figure in the long-term rebuild at Elland Road.
