Paul Scholes Doubts Matheus Cunha’s United Move Amid Concerns Over Club’s Struggles: “It’s Just a Bad Place to Go”

As speculation intensifies around Matheus Cunha’s potential transfer to Manchester United this summer, club legend Paul Scholes has voiced concern over the Brazilian’s chances of thriving at Old Trafford.

Cunha has been pivotal for Wolves this season, hitting a landmark 15 Premier League goals—a record-equalling tally for a Brazilian in a single campaign. His standout performances have reportedly drawn the attention of United, who are said to have tabled a five-year deal to secure his services. With Wolves now safe from relegation, the forward may be nearing the end of his stint at Molineux.

However, despite the apparent tactical fit—United and Wolves both employ a system that accommodates Cunha’s preferred left-sided No. 10 role—Scholes isn’t convinced the transfer is a wise move.

Speaking candidly via TNT Sports, the former midfielder acknowledged Cunha’s athleticism and technical prowess but cast doubt on whether any new signing could currently succeed at United, given the club’s ongoing turmoil. “I just worry for any signing coming to Manchester United at the minute,” Scholes said. “It just feels like it’s such a bad place to go. The quality of play right now is so poor.”

While fellow pundit Gary Neville has endorsed the move, citing United’s need for more attacking threat, Scholes believes deeper issues—ranging from inconsistent performances to tactical disarray—could stifle Cunha’s impact.

Although Cunha has flourished in a Wolves side where his creativity is supported by hard-working teammates, the dynamics at United are markedly different. The increased scrutiny, pressure to deliver, and lack of a cohesive structure may prove to be obstacles too large to overcome.

Ultimately, Cunha’s prospective switch to Manchester United presents both promise and peril. On paper, it looks like a natural step up, but the current instability at the club could derail even the most talented of players. Whether Cunha can rise above the challenges or become another casualty of United’s ongoing struggles remains to be seen.
