Gabbiadini Warns of Major Sunderland Crisis: Slump in Form, Tactical Tinkering Could Derail Promotion Push
Sunderland legend Marco Gabbiadini has sounded the alarm over the Black Cats’ alarming dip in form, questioning whether head coach Regis Le Bris’ recent squad rotation strategy could prove costly as the Championship play-offs approach.
Gabbiadini’s concerns come after Sunderland slumped to a fourth consecutive league defeat, this time a 2-0 loss to Oxford United. While previous defeats were partially attributed to Le Bris resting key players in preparation for the post-season, the Oxford game saw a near full-strength side take the pitch—yet still fail to produce a meaningful response.
With just one fixture remaining in the regular season, a home tie against QPR, Gabbiadini fears the team’s recent lack of intensity and sharpness could see their promotion bid end in disappointment.
Speaking on BBC Radio Newcastle’s *Total Sport*, Gabbiadini said: “It’s a strange one going into this last game. It doesn’t mean much on paper, but mentally it could be crucial. The bigger concern is whether this team can suddenly turn things around when it really matters.”
He highlighted the lack of competition for places in the squad, suggesting most players already know who will start the big games—leading to complacency. “Around 70-80% of this squad probably aren’t under pressure for their places,” he explained. “And that’s a problem.”
Sunderland’s attacking struggles are another red flag. “Eight goals in 12 games—that’s a huge issue,” Gabbiadini noted. “It’s not just about not scoring. We’re conceding too.”
While Gabbiadini acknowledged that the unpredictable nature of the play-offs can offer hope—”You don’t need to win both legs 3-0. Two goalless draws and a penalty shootout can do it”—he warned that Sunderland’s current trajectory is dangerously flat.
“This has been coming,” he said. “We talked about it weeks ago—resting players, not playing your best XI, trying to balance freshness with rhythm. But if the team can’t raise their game next week or in the semi-finals, all of this could backfire badly. Right now, it feels like we’re stumbling toward the finish line, and that’s not how you want to go out.”
